Micro Hydro Power
In developing countries, like Pakistan, Pelton wheel impulse turbines are widely used in large projects and dams due to their higher efficiency. Unfortunately in Pakistan Pelton turbines are rarely installed for micro* or pico** hydro energy generation. Pelton turbines out perform cross-flow turbines where there is high water head and relatively low water flow. In the Northern mountainous area of Pakistan there are numerous water streams where Micro or Pico Pelton turbines could be installed to produce electricity for households and communities. Uninterrupted power supply would certainly provide opportunities to these communities to develop cottage industry. Pico hydro turbines could also be used by households in cities to regain electricity from drink water supply. Switzerland has vast experience in harnessing power from small mountainous streams with pelton micro hydro technology. Solarberg LTD with its Swiss connections is working on bringing benefits of this experience to Pakistan.
